How to...

convert a file to a vis5d file

install VIS5D

install CAVE5D

write a configuration file for CAVE5D

run an application in the CAVE

run an application on the Immersadesk

run CAVE5D

The chart shows the complete process of running CAVE5D or VIS5D. All steps must be performed for the applications to work properly.

convert a file to a vis5d file

The location of the conversion application is found on the path /home/climate/jtaylor/TOVIS5D. You must copy tovis5d and user.in into your directory. You can also download the files from the ftp link listed below. To run the application you must be logged onto 'denali'. At the command line type 'tovis5d <file name>'. This creates vis5d.file which is of a vis5d format. You can also edit the tovis5d.csh file to change fields, delete fields, and to customize the file. More information is found within the README file located in the above directory.

Download tovis5d

install VIS5D

These directions were taken from the VIS5D README

Get/Install Library

1. Start ftp: %ftp ftp.unidata.ucar.edu

2. Login as anonymous and send you email address as the password

3. Go to the pub/netcdf directory: ftp> cd pub/netcdf

4. Transfer files in binary mode: ftp> binary

5. Get the netcdf archive file: ftp> get netcdf-3.4.tar.Z

6. Exit ftp: ftp> bye

7. Uncompress and un-tar the archive file: % uncompress netcdf-3.4.tar.Z % tar -xvf netcdf-3.4.tar

8. Change to the newly created netcdf src direcotry: % cd netcdf-3.4/src

9. Run configure to create the proper Makefile: % configure

10. Compile: % make

11. Change to the libsrc directory: % cd libsrc

12. Copy libnetcdf.a to /vis5d-5.2./src(After step 9 below): % cp libnetcdf.a /vis5d-5.2/src

13. Now install Vis5D...

Get/Install VIS5D

1. Go to the directory in which you want Vis5D installed: % cd /usr/mydir

2. Start ftp: % ftp www.ssec.wisc.edu

3. Login as anonymous and send your email address as the password

4. Go to the pub/vis5d directory: ftp> cd pub/vis5d-5.2

5. Transfer files in binary mode: ftp> binary

6. Get the Vis5D archive file: ftp> get vis5d-5.2.tar.Z

7. Get the optional sample data archive file: ftp> get vis5d-data.tar.Z

8. Exit ftp: ftp> bye

9. Uncompress and un-tar the archive file: % uncompress vis5d-5.2.tar.Z % tar -xvf vis5d-5.2.tar

10. Change to the newly created vis5d directory:% cd vis5d-5.2

11. Optionally uncompress and untar the data file: % mv ../vis5d-data.tar.Z . % uncompress vis5d-data.tar.Z% tar -xvf vis5d-data.tar

12. Run make: % make (your system)

13. Download viewer files: ftp> get vis5d.xxx.viewer.tar.Z (located in the vis5d directory @ ftp www.ssec.wisc.edu)

14. Uncompress and un-tar the archive: % uncompress vis5d.xxx.viewer.tar.Z% tar -xvf vis5d.xxx.viewer.tar

install CAVE5D

To install CAVE5D download the executable and uncompress and untar the file. Read the README file and modify the makefiles for Library and Include pathnames. Finally, run the makefiles.

Download CAVE5D executable for IRIX 6.5 machines

write a configuration file for CAVE5D

A configuration file can be created in any text editor. The below web site contains excellent documentation on what you can add to a configuration file. Add graphical objects, save the file, and implement it using the command line explained above in the run CAVE5D section. Examples of configuration files are found in the directory /home/climate1/mickelso/Configs.

www.ccpo.odu.edu/~cave5d/cave5dGuide.html

run an application in the CAVE

-Turn on the projectors (using the 'Standby' key, NOT POWER)

-Login to machine cymru

-Open a shell

-'ssh' to tundra

-Execute 'source /usr/local/CAVE/bin/start_cave'

-Change to directory of desired application. There is a copy of CAVE5D in the directory ftp://ftp.mcs.anl.gov/pub/People/voelz/.

-Run the application by typing 'cave5d <config file>' or 'cave5d_edu_65 <congig file> depending on which version of CAVE5D you are running. cave5d is the 64bit version and cave5d_edu_65 is a 32bit version.

-To shut down, execute 'source /usr/local/CAVE/bin/stop_cave'

-Close shell

-Log out of cymru

-Turn off the projectors (using the 'Standby' key, NOT POWER)

run an application on the Immersadesk

-Turn on the projectors (using the 'Standby' key, NOT POWER)

-Login to Tundra

-Copy .caverc in the directory insley/.caverc

-Open a new window and execute /usr/local/CAVE/bin/start_desk_tracking

-Execute the application by typing cave5d_edu_65<configfile> or cave5d<configfile> and add 'caveconfig /usr/local/CAVE/etc/dsldesk.config'

-Exit tracking window

-Exit from yukon

-Turn off projector by using the 'Standby' switch

run CAVE5D

To load the application you must be in the same path as the CAVE5d program. Then type cave5d_edu_65 <config file> at the command line.

To rotate view, hold down the middle button and move the wand around.

To zoom, point the wand in the desired direction and move the joystick accordingly.

To get to the master control panel hit the left button.

To make selections hit the left button.

The graphical objects panel will vary depending on the configuration file. An example is shown above. To make a selection, hit the left button over the appropriate choice. Once done, hit the close box. This will return you back to the master control panel.

How to use added features to CAVE5D

In order to change the configuration values for the graphical objects, select the "Graphical Objects" button on the first panel. Then select the "Change Configuration Values" button on the next panel. Next you must select which graphical object you would like to change. Once you make your selection, a new panel will come up. Finally select which variable you would like to change. On this next panel, use the right button to hit the numbers, once a desired value has been entered, press the "Enter" button. Pushing close will not automatically change the value. Clear is used to clear the value in the box. You will also notice that it will keep track of the current value for you in case you forget it.
