petsc: bommeramg for system of PDE's

Dear PETSc users,

How can I force boomeramg to solve for systems of PDE's (multiple variables)?
The Hypre manual is unclear about this, and I could not find the option in
PETSc that would allow to do it.
Here is what I found in the manual from Hypre:
"If the users wants to solve systems of PDEs and can provide information
on which variables belong to which function, BoomerAMG?s systems AMG
version can also be used." (paragraph 6.3 page 52).
