Re: [AG-TECH] windows sound card woes

Hi Gavin,

I've had problems when ALSA is used and use OSS on my Linux-based AG node (I know you said Windows, but I'm just relaying my experiences for others). I've found it works much better and I don't have to go hunting for one of the 100s of things under it that need to be muted so you don't get echo and feedback, which may be similar to your 'echo on the card' problem. I also have an SB Audigy.
On Windows nodes I've been fine with the AC97 audio before, the same as Paul mentioned. I also had RAT crash when I tried putting the same SB Audigy in our Windows display machine.

So I'm not new to this Access Grid thing, but I'm having lots of problems lately!

I can't get RAT to cooperate. The integrated audio on a Dell Precision 650 workstation would not give me audio line-in or microphone record. I then disabled integrated audio and threw in a Soundblaster PCI 512, but RAT would crash or lock up every other minute.

I then went to the store and bought a Soundblaster Audigy SE. It gave me echo right on the card! The speaker out would leak into the microphone in, causing the remote site to hear themselves faintly. The record gain was way too low even when maxed out and boosted. And RAT would _still_ crash, but only about every ten minutes.

So I'm really frustrated. Could someone please recommend their choice sound card or device for use under Windows with AGtk 3.0.2?

I'm thinking about getting the M-Audio FireWire Audiophile recommended on the Hardware Reference. Will RAT behave with this choice?

Cheers,
