You're exactly correct on #1 and #2, but wrt #3, there should be a button that saves the current autoplace settings as the default.

an other window size the grid is not computed again.

That functionality is only in the AccessGrid vic, in the
autoplace_ui.tcl file,
in the ag-media cvs module.  You can view the file online here:

media/vic/tcl/autoplace_ui.tcl

If you're building on Linux, I'd recommend that you use the vic-build
script.
On Windows, we use something like this:

cd ag-media
devenv vic\vic.sln /build "DDraw Release"

Can you say more about the changes you plan for autoplace?
