Re: [AG-TECH] Problem with mic, rat and gentoo
This is a characteristic of AC97 based cards. Rat handles some of them by hardcoding;
others can be handled by setting the OSS_IS_AC97 environment variable.
export OSS_IS_AC97=1 (for sh)
setenv OSS_IS_AC97 1 (for csh)
Hopefully this fixes the problem.

Hi Jason,
This was the first thing I tried, I prefer the talk to start muted,
however the setting made no difference.
This is a strange problem. I have had a look in the AudioService script
(inside AudioService.zip) but cant find anything I would think would
make a difference.

Hi Ashley
Have you tried editing the audio service settings through the "manage my
node" configuration tool????
You have the ability to change the input and output levels as well as
turning talk on and off.
These setting may help as well.
Cheers,
Jason.

Hi Jason,
This looks good, I have found the file and the setting "*audioInputMute:
1" However if I set this to 0, next time the Venue Client opens the
RAT it is set make to 1.
Also interesting, if I open RAT with the command "rat
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/xxx" the mic setting is left unchanged (this is good),
however if it is opened with the Venue Client then I still get the
feedback. This is making me think the venue client is doing something
I do not want it to do.
Any more ideas?

Hi Ashley
There is a RatDefaults file in the home directory (Well there is for
fedora anyway), you might want to changes some of the settings in that
file so that when "rat" starts up, none of your settings are changed.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Jason.

Hi,
Normally in the mixer (gnome volume control), we have the mic input
muted, with the record ticked. This works. Our problem is that when rat
is started it un-mutes the sound, so that the sound plays though the
speakers. Ticking the mute box fixes this again.
My problem is that every time rat is opened, or settings are changed,
the mic feedbacks though the speakers, and I have to tick the mute
box again.
We are running a sound blaster live. We are using OSS because ALSA
gives
a distorted sound.
This does not happen on our Fedora Access Grids, only our gentoo Access
Grid.
Anybody have any other ideas?

Sounds like you have to adjust your mixer to not play capture back
through. If you are not using ALSA, then I would highly recommend it.

Hi,
We have set up a single computer accessgrid using Gentoo Linux. We
have
used the official AG2.3 toolkit.
My problem is that every time a new rat is opened (changing venue
etc)
or a setting is changed, rat unmutes the microphone and the mic plays
directly into the speakers. This causes feedback though the mic and
speakers. I then need to remute the mic in the gnome volume control
to
get rid of the feedback.
Does anybody have any ideas of what could be causing this, and a
suggested fix.
Thanks,
Ashley
