The Access Grid is based off of the Globus toolkit currently. The Globus
toolkit is one toolkit developed to enable the creation and use of
grids. Primarily what the AG uses of the Globus toolkit are the secure
connections (hence the need for certificates) and data transfer/storage
(i.e., GridFTP). By itself, the AGTk does not allow the job submission,
etc; however, since it's based on the Globus toolkit adding those
services or shared applications is fairly trivial. Derek has the right
description in regards to the AG enabling people to interact the way
that Globus and grid toolkits enable computers/clusters to interact.

That being said, I believe there has been work as part of the Scientific
Workspaces of the Future (SWOF) project to create an AG shared
application or service that allows an AG user to start globus jobs on a
remote cluster using data stored in the AG data store and collect data
back to the AG data store.

Good morning, guys!
This is interesting. any updates on this work? do you know any key people working on this endeavor? :)

For my own understanding of it, I didn't think that grid-computing (TeraGrid) and AccessGrid were the same sorts of things. To my mind, 'AccessGrid' is a colaborative tool, any number of people can interact with each other. Grid computing on the other hand is .. well, any number of *computers* 'interacting' with each other, i.e. job/message passing. People might use the AccessGrid to talk about projects like TeraGrid, but I don't believe they are as closely related as you mention.
By nodes 'working', the subject I thought was that of running AccessGrid audio, video and display services on machines of either platform (Windows/Linux). In that manner, either platform works for each service. There may be performance differences, but they will both do a job.
Of course I am happy to be enlightened about any of this by anyone more knowledgable :)

Mmmm.... i dont understand then the "grid" part of AccessGrid, I though you could "send a job" to a resource on the grid... I know almost nothing about grid computing. How can u do that without comands like "globus-job-run"??
Could you send me some directions about how could I do it from Linux or windows?. Is there any documentation related to "how to access the grid using AccessGrid?", we have a deparment working on projects related to grid, I would like to know the things I should ask to them in order to do a demo about AccessGrid "grid" capabilities.

The point is that i wanna shouw our collegues a demo about accessing the grid and working together using the Accessgrid.

Kind regards,
Natalia.

Both platforms have globus, Windows and Linux. How else would a personal node work? :)
Chris is right, all combinations work. Python and C are cross-platform languages. In theory even Mac OS-X would work too, using the unix AG source.

Do people involved in Grid projects agree with that?. Does Win globus
support have the same functionality as Linux one? I think I recalled that
some months ago I realised that there werent the same globus files in
windows than in Linux, and I asked our system guys and they said that there
was no globus for windows...

Natalia.

I totally agree; all-Windows, all-Linux, mixed: all work. I don't
know the status of AG on Macs these days because we don't use them.

Cheers

mmm... r u sure? I thought the reason of the linux nodes was the

Am I wrong??

The globus stuff exists in the Windows version of the AG2 toolkit too.

While the answers below to the original question are strictly correct,
one can also ask/respond:

Can a multisystem node use linux as all three computers?
yes
What is the purpose of windows .... do I need it?
no

Can a multisystem node use winXP as all three computers?

yes

What is the purpose of the linux .... do I need it?

no
