Software Development and Dissemination
Any software tool designed to enable the solution of a variety of large-scale applications must be flexible, complete, and easy to use. The software developed as part of the SUMAA3d project will be complete enough to be used as a integrated package with all components working in conjunction with each other. In addition, the package will be flexible enough to be used as an open system in which a scientist's custom-designed software can be substituted for the default routines provided. To ensure that the SUMAA3d package is not limited by architectural considerations, we will use the MPI standard to achieve portability to variety of computational platforms including the IBM SP series, Intel Paragon, Cray T3d, SGI Power Challenge, and networks of RS6000, SGI, HP, DEC alpha, and SUN sparc workstations.
To facilitate use, we will provide online and hard-copy documentation in the form of technical reports, journal articles, and man pages for all algorithms and routines developed as a part of the SUMAA3d project. In addition, graduate student and postdoctoral liaisons will be stationed part time at universities and laboratories interested in solving large-scale applications. The students will have the opportunity to work with the newest distributed memory architectures, state-of-the-art algorithmic design, and challenging large-scale applications. In addition, the close contact with applications scientists will ensure that the SUMAA3d project continues to provide the capabilities necessary to meet user needs.
