Undergraduate/Graduate Research Opportunities

Here is a list of research opportunities for undergraduate or graduate students interested in mathematical modeling. Even though many of the programs listed here are not specifically for students just interested in mathematical modeling, most of the suggested projects will have a computational or mathematical modeling component.

  • The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) is a summer program for undergraduate students interested in science and engineering. It is sponsored by NSF, held at various US campus, and it lasts 9 to 10 weeks during the summer. Each student invited to participate in the program will work on his or her own project in collaboration with a faculty.   • The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at the Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials at Northwestern University, Illinois, runs a 9 week program during the summer. Each student invited to participate in the summer research experience works on his or her own project in collaboration with a faculty.   • The Cornell Theory Center's Supercomputing Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) is a two-month program during summer 97. Each student invited to participate in the summer research experience works on his or her own project in collaboration with a faculty.   • Ames Laboratory has a Summer Student Traineee Program.

  • Argonne National Laboratory has a Summer Research Participation Program as well as a Cooperative Education Program (CO-OP). Undergraduate students entering their junior or senior year and students who will graduate in the spring, may apply for the program.   • The Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory has a summer program (May 26-August 8) for undergraduate students majoring in computer science or a related discipline.   • Argonne National Laboratory has a Science and Engineering Research Semester Program (SERS). The students selected to participate in the program will work on a specific research project under the mentorship of an Argonne staff scientist. Information.

  • Brookhaven National Laboratory has an Undergraduate Summer Student Program. The applicants have to be a junior or a senior. The participant will, for ten weeks, be working on a training program with a staff member to acquire research experience. Information.

  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has a College Summer Research Program. The applicants have to have achieved junior status or graduated the previous semester.
