Numerical Algorithms and Software for PDEs

We perform basic research in the design, implementation and remote support of numerical software libraries for PDEs. Our focus is on providing appropriate solver, grid management, and discretization components that work in an open, standard-based component architecture. To this end, we have developed PETSc, a powerful suite of data structures and routines for the scalable (parallel) solution of scientific applications modeled by partial differential equations.

Petroleum Reservoir Simulation: the largest fully implicit parallel compositional simulation with more than 32 million degrees of freedom; this simulation achieved over 10 gigaflops on a 128-node IBM SP, with parallel efficiencies over 80%.
